What to know

Deer Lake State Park protects one of South Walton's coastal dune lakes, a lake type Florida State Parks describes as extremely rare worldwide. A boardwalk crosses the dune system to a half-mile of beach, while separate trails north of 30A pass through pine habitat and reach an overlook of Deer Lake. The owner especially wants guests to notice the lake outfall, where high lake water can temporarily break through the beach and connect with the Gulf.

The park suits families, couples, birders, beachgoers, and anyone interested in the dune-lake ecosystem. The tradeoff is limited infrastructure: parking can fill, there are no lifeguards, and pets cannot use the boardwalk or beach. The outfall is a natural, weather-driven event and may be closed on the day of a visit.

The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset and currently uses an honor box for the entrance fee. Florida State Parks warns that it frequently reaches capacity and can close for several hours during busy periods, including to pedestrians and cyclists. Restrooms, accessible parking, a picnic pavilion, and the accessible beach boardwalk are near the main parking area.

• Pets are allowed in limited park areas but not on the boardwalk or beach, and there are no lifeguards.
